To support Earth Hour 2014 on March 29, from 8:30 – 9:30 pm, individuals, businesses and local communities are requested to sign up on the official Earth Hour Sri Lanka website (www.earthhour.lk). By participating in the global ‘switch off’, Sri Lankans will be able to join millions of others from around the world to demonstrate a commitment to save the planet.

Earth Hour is a global initiative organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that has been engaging individuals from all over the world for eight years. Each year, millions of people from all corners of the globe unite with the single act of “switching off” power for one whole hour. The initiative has grown to involve hundreds of millions of people from all walks of life across 7,000 cities and towns in more than 154 countries and territories. This mass action is not about saving electricity for an hour but is about bringing people together to show their commitment to protecting the planet and reducing our environmental footprint on the Earth.

This year, Earth Hour has partnered with motion picture super hero Spider-Man who will serve as an ambassador for the cause in order to raise maximum awareness. As Spiderman joins the Earth Hour initiative, individuals around the world are preparing to come together and ‘switch off’. At precisely 8:30 PM on Saturday 29th March 2014, hundreds of millions of people from businesses, governments and local communities around the world will turn off their lights for one hour. This single act transcends all barriers of race, religion, culture, society, age and geography and enables people to be part of a global celebration of the plant and commitment to preserve it.

Commenting on the power of Earth Hour, Abdul Qadir Uvais, Earth Hour representative in Sri Lanka stated, “Earth Hour is a powerful movement that through the simple act of ‘switching off’ the power brings together millions of people in an effort to show their commitment to preserving the planet.  The Earth Hour initiative inspires an international dialogue and resource sharing that transcends all boundaries and truly unites people in an effort to celebrate and protect our planet.”

Use your power and join the mission to protect this planet. For more information or to pledge your support visit www.earthhour.lk and share your stories on www.facebook.com/EarthHourSriLanka
